Education outreach Department overview

The Natural History Museum of Jamaica, Education and Outreach Department is the face of NHMJ. They are responsible for maintaining the exhibition spaces by mounting exhibitions, hosting environmental days of significant activities and also to inform and educate persons about Jamaica’s rich biodiversity. We also have free brochures accessible for the public both online for downloading and in office.

World Wetlands Day

World Wetlands Day is celebrated annually by the NHMJ division. It is commemorated on February 2 of each year at the Mason River Protected Area in Clarendon.

Earth Day

Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 each year to promote the preservation of the Earth’s natural resources.

Biodiversity Awareness Programme

The Biodiversity Awareness Programme is an 11-year collaborative programme with Highway 2000 East-West which ended in 2022.

National Tree Planting Initiatives

On the first Friday of October, the NHMJ commemorates National Tree Planting Day with various activities geared towards encouraging replanting efforts in schools, communities and families.

Summer Programme

The Natural History Museum of Jamaica resumed its Summer Programme on August 12-23, 2024 under the theme ‘My Environment & I’. The aim of the programme was to:

Exhibition

The Natural History Museum of Jamaica (NHMJ), a Division of the Institute of Jamaica, will be mounting a temporary exhibition which will combine the Museum’s collection of natural specimens with the living collections and natural beauty of the Gardens.

Outreach

The Natural History Museum of Jamaica offers a dynamic outreach programme—both in-person and virtual—designed to increase awareness of the museum’s collections and Jamaica’s rich ecosystems, including its plants, animals, and natural habitats.

The NHMJ division connects with their public audience through their social media platform Facebook, Twitter and Instagram @ ilovenhmj and on Youtube @ Natural History Museum of Jamaica.
