Botany

Overview

The Botany Department oversees the largest herbarium in the English-speaking Caribbean, housing over 130,000 plant specimens—mainly from Jamaica, the West Indies, and nearby continental regions. The collection includes flowering plants, algae, fungi, lichens, mosses, ferns, as well as Jamaican wood samples, seeds, and fruits. Its primary goals are to preserve the national collection, research Jamaican flora, and share findings with the public.
