The Museum engaged the operators of Highway 2000 East-West, TransJam (formerly TransJamaican Highway Ltd. and Jamaican Infrastructure Operator Ltd.) to establish an 11 year Biodiversity Awareness Programme, which began in 2011 at the Chandlers Pen Primary and Junior High School in Chateau, Clarendon. The project involved the conduct of biodiversity-related activities centred around a Biodiversity Centre that functions as a resource centre at the school. The project later expanded to include Freetown Primary, Moores Primary and Rosewell Primary Schools in Clarendon and the Independence City Primary School in Portmore, St. Catherine through the installation of vegetable gardens. The gardens were intended to be used as tools for biodiversity education, a source of income generation for the schools as well as a means to offset the cost for providing nutritious meals for the students. Through this programme, the museum engaged the schools in numerous activities including:
- Field trips
- Biodiversity Competitions
- Biodiversity Clubs in 5 schools in the vicinity of the Highway 2000 East-West
- Installation and maintenance of School Gardens
- The observance of numerous environmental days of significance through various activities
- Biodiversity field trips
- Biodiversity Expos
- Biodiversity publications (Vegetable Garden Activity Booklet, Biodiversity Newsletter, Cleaner is Greener Handbook, Posters, Brochures & Bookmarks)
- “Cleaner is Greener” webinar series
